It's over. Gaddafi is gone. Toronto celebrates!

This morning, while driving to work and trying to absorb the fact of Gaddafi being gone -- gone from Libya, gone from this life -- I turned off the radio, and pressed the CD button. There was a CD inside that I hadn't played in many years; I'd grabbed it the other day looking for something different.  It was an old Randy Newman CD, and when it spun up, it played his song "Better off Dead"

Yes, I thought, the world, and Libya are indeeed better off that he's dead.

Tonight, the Toronto Libyan community & supporters gathered to celebrate together at Yonge-Dundas Square, which has hosted so many rallies for Libya. It was, in fact, eight months to the day after that first rally back on Feb. 20.  There was a much different feel tonight.

One photo from tonight; one from Feb. 20. (Photos from some of the earlier rallies are at www.photos.libyatoronto.com).

There will be another rally for Libyan freedom. NOTE CHANGED LOCATION:

Saturday, April 30
Assemble at 12:00, march at 12:30

Ann Tindal Park, Harbourfront Centre
235 Queens Quay W.

The message:

  1. Canada must suspend relations with the Libyan Embassy given it's on going support for Gaddafi's regime
While numerous Libyan diplomats around the world (including the mission to the UN) have denounced the Gaddafi regime, and have endorsed the new Transitional Council, the Libyan Embassy in Canada is sticking with Gaddafi, and denounced the NATO mission as "treacherous" and "barbaric".
  2. Canada must join France, Qatar, and Italy in recognizing the Interim National Transitional Council in Libya.
  3. Canada and NATO must do more to assist besieged cities like  Misurata , Zawya,  Zintan, Yefurin, Jado and other towns to avert a humanitarian crisis. Food and medical supplies are extremely short.
  4. Canada should provide humanitarian help to the 30,000 civilian (most of them Women & children) are trapped in the border of Libya & Tunisia (Adhiba city).

Please join us for a Mass Demonstration to stand in solidarity with the people of Libya as they fight for freedom, democracy and to end the 42-year dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi .

Rally for Libya: Ottawa, Apr. 9

Hundreds of supporters gathered in front of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa on a glorious, sunny spring day. Buses from Toronto and St. Catharines/Hamilton brought out-of-towners &; the Lord Elgin Hotel even offered a special rate for those who wanted to stay over.

The purpose of the rally was to support the following:

1.Canada must suspend relations with the Libyan Embassy given its support for Gaddafi's regime.

2. Canada must join France, Qatar, and Italy in recognizing the interim National Transitional Council in Libya.

3. Canada and NATO must do more to assist besieged cities like Misrata, Zawya, Zintan, Yefren, Jado and other towns to avert a humanitarian crisis. Food and medical supplies are extremely short.

4. Canada and NATO must do more to assist the opposition forces in defending Libyan civilians against Gadaffi's forces.

Speakers included former cabinet minister David Kilgour and the NDP's Foreign Affairs critic, Paul Dewar.  There was great energy and spirit, and eventually, we marched from Parliament Hill to the site of the Libyan Embassy, and called for the resignation of the Libyan Ambassador.
